ACUPRESSURE

What is it?

Acupressure is an ancient healing art developed in Asia over five thousand years ago. In acupressure, the fingers are used to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. When these acupressure points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body's life force energy to aid healing. Acupressure uses gentle but firm pressure and integrates bodywork therapies, therapeutic touch and massage therapy techniques.

What are its benefits?

An acupressurist can help in the treatment of a wide range of health conditions, including those where there is no discernable western medical diagnosis. Acupressure helps in relieving pain, balancing the body, and maintaining good health. Its healing touch reduces tension, increases circulation, and enables the body to relax deeply. By relieving stress, acupressure therapy strengthens resistance to disease and promotes wellness.

Another advantage of acupressure is it is safe to do on yourself and others - even if you've never done it before. No drugs or invasive surgery techniques are used. The only equipment you will ever need are your own two hands. Acupressure can be effectively used to relieve headaches, eyestrain, sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, ulcer pain, menstrual cramps, lower back aches, constipation indigestion, insomnia and tension due to stress.

Is it for me?

Although acupressure is not a substitute for medical care, it is often an appropriate complementary treatment. It can, for instance, speed the healing of a broken bone once it has been set, or aid cancer patients by helping to alleviate some of the pain and anxiety associated with the disease. It is also an effective adjunct to chiropractic treatment. By relaxing and toning the back muscles, acupressure makes the spinal adjustments easier and more effective, and the results last longer.
