Rolfing

Rolfing is a body work technique that can bring significant changes in the body structure of a person. Rolfing manipulates soft tissues with the goal of providing a sense of vitality and well-being. It was developed in the early to mid 1950's by Dr. Ida Pauline Rolf.  It is also known as Structural Integration. It aims to bring the various segments of the body like head, neck torso etc into balanced and supportive relationships with one another.

Every joint, muscle, bone and organ is surrounded by fascia or connective tissue. This shapes and strengthens the body. Repeated and improper pattern of use like the way one walks, sits, stands or sleeps will harden the fascia.

The Rolfer uses his hands, fingers and elbows to lengthen the shorten connective tissue just like a sculptor working with clay. Rolfing frees the adhesions. Human body can become out of balance due to ageing, gravity, emotional stress, previous injuries and poor posture. This can affect the body in various ways like decrease in flexibility, backache, headache, general aches and pains etc. Roofers at and address the body of the client as a whole rather than separate parts.

People form different walks of life and different desire come to experience Rolfing. Some take Rolfing to get relieved from the chronic pain; some take it for better performance in dance, sport, meditation or yoga, some to seek more flexibility, some to grow emotionally. Rolfing helps people to perform better in their daily lives, professions and activities.

Before starting the Rolfing session the rolfer does a thorough evaluation of the client’s structure and movement patterns.

Generally a client needs to undertake ten sessions of Rolfing to achieve his goals. Each session may be of one and a half hours and may scheduled anywhere between one week and three weeks apart.  Each Rolfing session will have its specific goals to achieve. Rolfing is a very personal process and therefore only one client is attended at a time at one place. Rolfing is quite effective and has cumulative and long lasting results.

Every person may have a different experience of Rolfing. Benefits of Rolfing are improved posture, Greater flexibility, ease of movement, improved balance, decreased chronic pain.
